Introduction

The powerlifting community is a force to be reckoned with, and it's time to build an even stronger one. Powerlifting, a form of strength training focusing on three main lifts - the bench press, squat, and deadlift - has gained popularity worldwide.

It's not just a great way to build physical strength, but it also has the potential to transform lives. Powerlifting federations worldwide hold events where you will meet a lot of people with the same passion as you.

As recently as February 2025, I lifted at the WRPF UK's inaugural Iron Maidens competition. Here, 39 women of all ages and backgrounds came together to compete against yet also support each other. There were some impressive lifts, but what was more striking was the friendships forged and the electric atmosphere.

Why Should a Lifter Embrace the Powerlifting Community?

Our sport goes beyond lifting heavy weights. It's a community, a sense of belonging, and a supportive network of like-minded individuals who understand the dedication and discipline that the sport requires.

Embracing community means being part of a group that shares your passion for pushing physical limits and supports you every step of the way. It's about finding a sense of belonging, where personal records are celebrated, challenges are overcome, and lifelong friendships are made through the shared love of lifting heavy circles.

As coaches at Sportive Tricks, we bring our lifters together to work as a team while still chasing their individual goals. The role of the community in sports is recognized in research such as Okhechukwu's 2021 paper and Greenly et al.'s 2024 report.

The Role of Community in Powerlifting

Davis et al.'s 2021 research indicates that social reward and support in exercise are associated with positive exercise experiences and more significant performance outputs. Subjective enjoyment, energy, and perceptions of community social support and belonging influenced exercise-related behavior, psychology, and physiology.

  • By engaging with a supportive powerlifting community, lifters have access to a vast pool of knowledge and experience that can catapult their training to new heights.
  • Surrounding yourself with experienced lifters and a great coach creates an environment of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Having role models within the community provides inspiration and guidance, allowing beginners to learn from those who have already succeeded in powerlifting.
  • The community is a support system, motivating powerlifters to push past their limits and achieve new personal bests.

Community Support in Overcoming Challenges as a Powerlifter

Overcoming challenges is an inherent part of the sport, and a supportive community plays a critical role. When faced with setbacks, a supportive community can provide the encouragement and motivation needed to persevere.

  • Shared experiences: Connecting with fellow lifters who have faced similar challenges builds resilience and provides valuable insights on effective strategies to overcome obstacles.
  • Encouragement during tough training phases: Peer backing during intense training periods, such as peaks and strength plateaus, helps powerlifters stay focused and motivated.
  • Supportive environment: Our supportive powerlifting community creates a safe space for lifters to discuss their challenges openly, seek advice, and receive constructive feedback.
  • Building connections to tackle obstacles: Powerlifters can form alliances, collaboratively sharing expertise and working together to overcome roadblocks.

Louie Simmons, renowned powerlifting coach and founder of Westside Barbell, stressed the significance of the training environment: "You need to be in a gym where people are about at your level, but where you've got guys who know more and can lift more than you. If your goal is to become better, though, you have to know when it's time to move on to a better gym with stronger people training there.

The Impact of a Supportive Lifting Community on Personal Growth

Personal development through the strength of community provides a sense of belonging and support. Camaraderie and mutual support in the community act as catalysts for individual growth and progress.

The encouragement received from like-minded individuals aids in personal transformation. It creates resilience in facing challenges, making powerlifting not just about physical strength but also emotional and mental fortitude.

Eime et al., 2010, showed that club sport participants had significantly higher scores on several health-related quality of life measures and life satisfaction, suggesting that the social aspect of club sports may enhance the health benefits of physical activity.

Fostering Personal Development through Community Strength

Eather et al., 2023, found that sports performed in group settings were found to provide more potent benefits for mental and social outcomes compared to individual sports, likely due to their social nature.

  • Within a thriving community, individuals experience amplified personal development.
  • Strong communities catalyze physical and mental growth, fostering personal growth journeys.
  • The environment of mutual support within the community enhances individual progress.

Cultivating Camaraderie and Mutual Support

Kirk Karwoski, 6-time IPF world champion, highlighted the unique mindset shared within the community: "Most powerlifters share some common defects, as a whole for whatever reason, LOVE to punish, beat and torture ourselves beyond the limits of mind and body. It is our spirit that prevails."

  • Cultivating a sense of camaraderie among powerlifters creates enduring bonds and mutual support.
  • Shared goals and mutual encouragement create a culture that strengthens lifters.

Encouraging a Humble Approach to Powerlifting

As John Dietrich, WPC Canada powerlifting promoter, noted, competitions provide lifters with opportunities to support each other: "Whether they make the lift or not, everyone is there to cheer for them and provide positive feedback for the next attempt."

  • Starting powerlifting with a mindset of humility promotes personal growth and development.
  • Emphasizing humility within the powerlifting family fosters camaraderie and mutual support among members.
  • Learning from each other becomes more effective when approached with humility.
  • A humble attitude enriches the powerlifting experience and creates a welcoming environment for all powerlifters to thrive.

The Transformative Power of Powerlifting Communities

  • Involvement enhances the athlete's experience by creating enriching relationships and a strong sense of belonging and support.
  • Being part of a like-minded group is more than just lifting weights; it's about building connections, finding inspiration, and growing together towards common goals.
  • The camaraderie and encouragement in these communities make them a pivotal aspect of the journey.

Pursuing Health and Personal Growth in Powerlifting

  • Strength training improves physical health and acts as a fantastic form of exercise for personal growth.
  • With its heavy lifting, powerlifting can be a great way to challenge yourself and promote mental and physical well-being.
  • Whether you are a novice still in high school, a masters athlete or a seasoned 30-something lifter, powerlifting offers a sense of camaraderie that can foster personal growth and physical strength.
  • The dedication required makes it more than just lifting weights; it becomes a pathway to good mental health and personal development.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes being a powerlifter different from doing other forms of strength training?

The sport maximizes strength in three main barbell lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Unlike general strength training, it emphasizes heavy lifting to achieve personal bests in these three lifts, combining physical and mental discipline.

How can joining a supportive group of lifters benefit me as a beginner?

For beginners, joining such a group offers a wealth of knowledge and support. It provides access to experienced lifters and coaches, peer motivation, and a safe space to share challenges and achievements. This camaraderie and support system can significantly accelerate your learning curve and improve your performance.

Are there any misconceptions about this sport that deter people from joining?

Yes, common misconceptions include the belief that lifting heavy is only for those who want to "bulk up" or that it's unsuitable for women. Another myth is that it is dangerous or leads to injuries. These misconceptions are addressed by fostering an inclusive group of lifters who emphasize proper technique, safety, and benefits for all body types and genders.

Can lifting contribute to personal growth and mental health?

Absolutely. Beyond the physical benefits, the sport challenges individuals to set and achieve goals, fosters resilience in facing obstacles, and builds confidence through measurable progress. The supportive environment also contributes to mental well-being by providing a sense of belonging and achievement.

How do I find the right circle for me?

Start by researching online for communities or local gyms, focusing on powerlifting. Look for groups that value inclusivity, support, and education. Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook are excellent resources to connect with powerlifting communities. Ensure your chosen group aligns with your values and goals and provides a supportive and encouraging environment.
